Paver Patio With a Built-In Firepit Space Done Right

Most patios look fine on day one. The problems show up after the first heavy rain - water pooling near the house, pavers shifting, edges crumbling. That's what happens when drainage is treated as an afterthought. We don't build it that way.

On this job, we laid out a multi-tone charcoal paver patio with a circular extension off the main field - designed specifically for a firepit setup. The circular bump-out gives the homeowner a dedicated spot for chairs and a fire, while the rectangular main section ties right into the back of the house. It's a layout that actually makes sense for how people use their outdoor space.

Here's the part most people don't think about until it's too late: slope. Every paver patio we install gets graded so water moves away from the structure, not toward it. That's not optional for us - it's just how we build. A patio that drains correctly holds up for years without the settling and shifting you see with sloppy installs.

The paver pattern we used here is a running herringbone style with mixed-size units in a weathered charcoal blend. It gives the surface a clean, finished look without being overdone. Simple border pavers lock the whole thing in and keep the edges from walking out over time. Every piece is set the same way - flat, tight, and locked in place.
